City Cost-of-Living Tier

Paris is not "all of France." A €150/night Paris hotel can be €90 in Lyon, €75 in Toulouse, €60 in Limoges. Use this to set realistic expectations — or to find a cheaper base.

What this solves

The biggest budget mistake: planning a 7-day Paris-only trip at €150/day, then finding out Paris hotels cost €200/night. The fix is either raising the budget, cutting Paris, or substituting cities.

The other reality: cost-of-living data from Numbeao/Expatistan is for residents, not travelers. Travelers spend mostly on hotels (€80–€300/night) and restaurants (€15–€50/meal), not groceries. We use traveler-specific data.

FAQ

How can I save on Paris?

Stay in arrondissement 12, 13, 19, or 20 (cheaper than 1, 4, 6, 8). Use Ibis Budget / B&B / Première Classe near Périphérique. Eat lunch as your main meal (formule menus €12–18). Many museums free first Sunday of month.

Is Lyon really cheaper than Paris?

~30–40% cheaper for hotels, 20% cheaper for restaurants, comparable for transit. Lyon is the cost-sweet-spot for a French city break.

What's the cheapest big city?

Limoges, Mulhouse, Saint-Étienne — far from tourist trail but real French cities. Marseille and Toulouse are also notably cheaper than Paris.
