Crit'Air Sticker & ZFE-m Zones

France uses a colored sticker system (Crit'Air) to restrict older/dirtier cars from low-emission zones (ZFE-m). 11 cities enforce them in 2026. Drive without the right sticker and the fine is €68–135.

What this solves

Two common mistakes: 1) Foreign-registered cars do need Crit'Air stickers — the ZFE-m cameras read the license plate and check the registered sticker, not just whether the plate is local. 2) Rental cars usually include the sticker, but if you rent from a small local agency or arrive by motorhome, you must order one yourself.

11 ZFE-m zones are active in 2026, and the rules tighten every year: Crit'Air 3 banned in Grand Paris by 2025; Crit'Air 4 banned in many zones by 2028. The political climate keeps pushing dates back, but as of mid-2026, here is what is enforced.

How to read the result

Your Crit'Air sticker

Six colors (green → black). 0 = electric/hydrogen. 1 = Euro 5/6 petrol + Euro 6 diesel. 2 = Euro 4 petrol + Euro 5 diesel. … 5 = pre-Euro 2. Unclassified vehicles (no Euro standard at all) get no sticker and are banned everywhere there's a ZFE-m.

Zone restrictions

Cities below show whether your sticker is currently allowed. Permanent restriction (ban) means the camera will fine you on detection. Some zones have "Crit'Air 5 + non-classified" bans; others ban 4 too.

Fines

No sticker or wrong sticker: €68 (paid in 30 days) up to €135 (max). Car not allowed to enter: €135. Repeat within 3 years: up to €750. Enforcement is automated with ANTAI cameras at all major ZFE-m entries.

FAQ

Where do I order a Crit'Air sticker?

The official site is the only safe place: certificat-air.gouv.fr. Cost €3.72 + postage. Allow 2–4 weeks by mail. Some préfectures also handle walk-in. Beware of scam sites charging €30+.

Do motorhomes need Crit'Air too?

Yes, if they meet the categories. Most modern motorhomes get sticker 1 or 2. Vintage ones get 3–4 or no sticker. Same ZFE-m rules apply. Parking in central Paris with a Crit'Air 4 motorhome will get fined overnight.

What about Paris during major events?

During some declared pollution peaks, even Crit'Air 1–2 can be temporarily banned. The préfecture declares these; check the day's pollution alert (ATMO) before driving in.
