London → Paris Channel Crossing

Eurostar, flight, and ferry aren't directly comparable: total time depends on London/Paris airports vs St Pancras vs ferry ports. We compute door-to-door and find the winner by traveler type.

What this solves

"Eurostar is 2h35" — true, but useless. The real comparison is door-to-door: from your London door to your Paris door. Eurostar's win collapses once you add Heathrow transfer; flying wins for far-north origins.

Ferry wins for travelers with cars, families with too much luggage to check, and people who actually like being on a boat. Cost in 2026: Eurostar from £49 (advance), flights from £60 one-way, ferry from £90 + car.

How to read the result

Door-to-door time

Real elapsed time, not scheduled time. Includes check-in, security, transfer, and arrival at your actual destination — not the train station.

True cost

Includes transfers (Tube from Heathrow £5.50–6, Roissybus €16, Orlybus €11.50), luggage fees if any, and credit-card surcharges.

Customs

Eurostar: UK/Schengen exit + entry controls at St Pancras, normally 15 min but queues happen. Flights: full Schengen border. Ferry: passport check on boarding.

Limitations

FAQ

Is Eurostar still the fastest?

For central London ↔ central Paris, yes — ~4h30 door-to-door, no security drama, direct metro connections. For Heathrow/CDG ↔ far airports, the math flips: a 1h20 flight + 1h transfer on each side beats the Eurostar + metro 5h30.

What about the overnight options?

No overnight trains. There used to be the Nightstar, killed 2023. For the truly adventurous, there are sleeper buses (FlixBus overnight London-Paris, ~9h, from £29) but they're slow and not recommended for sleep-sensitive travelers.

What about taking the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle with a car?

Eurotunnel Le Shuttle Folkestone-Calais is 35 min under the Channel. 2026 prices from £99 one-way for cars, more for peak times. Same passport control as ferry but much faster. Best for drivers heading further into France.
